Capernaum 7-8-13

Well, our guide told us the city "sells" better when they call it the tow of Jesus instead of the town of Peter!  Capernaum was the birthplace of Peter.  Jesus on the other hand lived here for a period of time while he preached in the synagogue and performed miracles, see Matthew 4:13 and 9:1.  Peter's house is a pile of ruins and there is a very new church, very contemporary Catholic church built on top of the house ruins.  There are places in the floor with glass where you can look down and see the ruins.  The synagogue where Jesus preached is directly behind Peter's home.  The original ruins of the temple are dark colored stones.  The 3rd century temple that was rebuilt and then torn down by the Romans has been excavated, the ruins that is, and have been restored to what you see today.
