This is the place where Peter was accused of being a follower of Jesus and recognized by fellow Galileans and was asked if he was a follower and he indeed did deny Jesus three times and then a rooster crowed. Peter wept and wept because he knew he had done exactly what Jesus had said he would do.
There is a bronze of Peter and Jesus and on top of it a rooster. There is also a rooster on top of the church.
The dungeon where Jesus was held is only a few steps away from this spot. We descended into the cave/dungeon and had our bible so that we could read the passage from Psalms. Jesus was a Jew, he knew the bible and knew that this passage expressed exactly what was happening to him. Psalm 88. Read it and you will understand.
There was only a small opening for light, water and food to be dropped to prisoners. The whole dungeon was a place of torture. There were spaces where you could tell that something had been in the stone, maybe nails, made stakes, something that held the prisoners stretched out by their arms and legs. To think that Jesus had to endure this pain before he had to carry his cross to his crucifixion...
