So much to say about Rio!!

The kids looked great in the Carnival spirit as soon as we got off the ship!

Went to Villa Mansion for dinner and a SHOW!! Lots of Samba dancers and costumes that won in last year's carnival contests.

Look at the shoes they wear!! They can dance better than dancing with the stars in THESE shoes!! Their costumes were SO outstanding! They were colorful and took up the entire dance space at times.

This lady was so beautiful I wanted to get her close up so you could see her makeup and jewelry. They are happy and proud Brazillians!

Kathleen joins the dance parade as the confetti started to fall from the ceiling and people were throwing streamers like it was really Carnival! We will miss Carnival by one month (approx) They celebrate Carnival a little longer here than they do in the US, like New Orleans or Mobile. They start the Thursday before Ash Wednesday and go for 10 days. At home, Fat Tuesday is the biggest day and then Ash Wednesday ends it all. For some reason here they go one extra day and then have one more parade of festival "winners' of contests on the Saturday after Ash Wednesday.

These pictures are of the mountain called Sugar Loaf. You get there by riding these amazing cable cars up the mountain!! It was scary but very exciting. You could see Copacabna, Ipanema and the ships from where we stood! It got very foggy and we were ready to get off that mountain. Got down fine and it seems we were the only ones that thought there might be a problem. We heard two stories. One said they only change the cables once every 40 years. The other was that they change the cables every 4 months. I liked the latter!

This is the famous Copacabana Hotel on Copacabana Beach! You could feel Carmen Miranda in the air here!!

We toured a mine of a jewelry store. Amsterdam Sauer. It seems Mr. Sauer was one of the first to discover emeralds in Brazil. He is still alive and well in Rio and lives right there at Copacabana Beach in a penthouse. The museum was very interesting. Brasil has emeralds, aquamarines, and a topaz called Imperial Topaz that are indiguous to this country. The Imperial Topaz can range from a yellowish color to a deep pink. Very beautiful. The mines are running out of them so they will be very valuable. It rained the first day and we carried our umbrellas, thanks to Charles for always having everything we need!! The ship behind Nicholas is one that holds 3,000 people!! This was not our ship. Ours only holds 700. That seems like plenty to us!
It is late and we are tired. We are somewhere out in the Atlantic Ocean. We will not see land again for 4 days. We will post more about Rio tomorrow.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EDGAR..WHEREVER YOU ARE!!!!!!
