Hakodate, Japan May 11, 2009

Hakodate is in the southwestern part of Hokkaido and is the closest posrt city to the main island of Honshu.
The day we spent here was rainy, windy and cool. A trip to the park, which has over 4,000 cherry trees was out. However, if they had still been in bloom, we would have done it! Unfortunately, we only missed it by a few days. I am sure if any of you are planning a trip to Japan, this would be a worthy spot to visit in late April. It would be an explosion of Cherry Blossoms!! We will have to settle for a trip down Highland Avenue next Spring in Birmingham, which, by the way, is quite spectacular if you have not seen those Cherry Trees!!
This part of Japan has some Christian influence. This was most apparent when we went to town. We were dropped off at a warehouse section of town where there were rows and rows of beautifully old red brick buildings that have been restored and are used as shopping warehouses. They were lovely.
Bakeries that looked like you were in France. Christmas village...who knew?
If you are a brick mason, you would enjoy just admiring the work that was put into the bricks and mortar of these places. They really are wonderful.
Every city in Japan decorates their "manholes". Yes, they love to have beautiful sewer/manholes! As evident in one shot. It seems that this town is highly famous for its seafood. There are 3 bodies of water that come together here. It is a fishing bonanza for sure.
Squid seems to be really popular. so much so, the locals did a "squid dance" for us on the pier!! It was wonderful.
One of the best things that happened here was Nicky getting to meet Miss Hakodate. She came on the ship with some represenatives of the city to have a gift exchange with the captain. They did this in every port we visited in Japan which was really nice.
