Singapore,Singapore 4-9-09

Singapore. Clean. Crowded. Sleek. Fun.

Spent the day on a Welden Family Tour with one addition. Our new friend and ship's priest for this world cruise, Father Tom Palko. He left the ship with us and said he was up for an adventure!
We left the ship and walked through a beautiful terminal that we all instantly remembered from our last trip here. Father Tom has never been to this part of the world so it was fun to share with him what we already knew and dicover some new things as well. We decided to be brave and try the subway system. After walking through what would be considered in the US a MEGA mall, 7 or so levels of crazy good shopping and bargains, we found beautiful directional signs to the subway. The do it yourself machines like in NYC were in Chinese, so we went to the "office". Bought 5 all day tickets because in doing that you get $10 Singapore dollars back for each ticket. The cost for each ticket all day turned out to be about $5.00 US, after we got our rebate!
We wanted to see Little India. Charles and I had been there in 1992. Not much has changed. We visited their fish market, clothing and antiques, sari market...all in one big walk through. We visited a Hindu temple and watched in amazement all that was happening. Everything from flower offerings to incense to men prostrating themselves and kissing the base of pillars in the temple to women making their own candle wicks and votives for offerings to some people having some sort of tea. Quite a happening. The smells of Little India brought back the smells of Mumbai! We did not stay for lunch, we decided Chinatown would be what we were looking for.
Chinatown. Crowded. Crowded. Cramped. Cramped. Year of the Ox. Year of the Ox.
Bought treasures, had a wonderful lunch and kept shopping.
Ran into a couple from Germany and they have a grand-daughter that is much Nicky's size, they stopped us and asked if he would try on the robe they wanted to buy for her. He did and we all enjoyed his reaction to it all. They really appreciated the gesture and we were off.
Had a great day. Love Singapore. What's not to like?

Your blog is great! Almost makes up for not being there. Can't wait to join our "cruise neighbors" in Osaka. We are having dinner with Hank & Sondra(our neighbors and cruise neighbors) tomorrow. Keep an eye out for fishing nets. Keep having fun times. Love Barbara
